Horizontal RipplesThe Renaissance artists went to great lengths to discover the “perfect” rectangular shape in which to construct a painting. The resulting “golden section” had a length-to-height ratio of 1: 1.618, (phi) and the Masters got pretty excited about using it.
I find it a frankly, boring format, and tend to use a far more extreme ratio of 1:3 or 1:4.
This tends to suit the “fingers of land, fingers of sea” dynamic that I am attempting to interpret in a lot of my Marlborough Sounds work.
